The Surgents Ride Puglia, Italy

Hello Everyone,

We just returned in October from a bicycle tour down the Danube. That was our first bicycle tour and it definitely got into our blood.  We now are counting down the days until our next one, h'mm how many days is that? Destination - Puglia Italy.

This is our first blog and want to have it as entertaining as informative. We will include pictures, videos, and interactive mapping of our travels. We will do our best to portray an accurate picture of bicycle touring for 7 weeks in Italy. The good, the bad, and hopefully, the not too ugly. We will be leaving on March 4th returning April 21st.

The following map is interactive. It is of our planned route. Feel free to click on the map. It should allow you to zoom in and out as you wish. In the upper right hand corner you can pick the style of map including satellite views.

The intended route will have us starting in Bari, Italy. First heading south, on the eastern shore, to the bottom of the heel. Once to the bottom we head north, on the western shore, then angling northeast to circle Gargano National Park and back to Bari.  We will fly to Rome to spend our last week visiting it's sites.

We picked this location for several reasons. The food and wine, relative flatness for Italy, and mild climate that has about 300 days of sun per year. It is also considered more rural and rustic than most of Italy.

Our Danube River ride was about 1350 km, very flat and downhill. Pretty much a dream ride for our first dip into bicycle touring. This ride will be somewhat shorter. 1015km but with an elevation gain of 2500 meters. The biggest hills will be towards the end by Gargano National Park. There are buses in Italy and we're not opposed to taking one if need be.

We developed our own route and have the luxury of spontaneous changes. This is not a commercial tour, just seat of the pants, figuring it out as we go. The attached route may already be outdated.

We invite all comments, questions, input, and recommendations. With your help, and hopefully, fun off the wall comments, we can keep this entertaining and succesfull.
